ASMCF-SSFH Schools’ Liaison and Outreach Fund for French and French History

About the Prize

The ASMCF is committed to supporting teaching and learning of the French language and about French and francophone histories, literatures and cultures at all levels of the UK and Irish education systems (primary, post-primary, further and higher education). As such, together with colleagues in the Society for the Study of French History (SSFH), we have established a dedicated outreach and engagement fund – the ASMCF-SSFH Schools’ Liaison and Outreach Fund for French and French History.

This fund supports the development of events, activities and resources to encourage and enhance teaching and learning across the areas of interest of the two societies. Previously funded activities have included university taster days, teacher development activities and podcasts, to name but a few.

We understand outreach as any event, activity or resource that is developed to support the teaching and learning of French and about the francophone world at primary, post-primary and FE level. The best outreach activities are developed in collaboration; we therefore encourage collaborative projects that draw on a range of educational expertise and experience to excite and engage learners in the study of French, France and the francophone world.

The reason behind our support for outreach is clear: without a new generation of learners connecting with and thinking about the world beyond our borders (in our case, the francophone world), the UK and Ireland will become increasingly insular, and the more worrying findings of the UK Language Trends surveys will only continue. We are therefore seeking to play our part in establishing a new trajectory for language learning in the UK and Ireland.

Terms and Conditions

Support is available for projects across the nations of the UK and the Republic of Ireland; however, the main applicant must be a member of either the ASMCF or the SSFH (or both). We particularly encourage projects that engage with neglected histories and cultures and those that have a Widening Participation focus. To gain a better understanding of the types of events, activities and resources for which we offer support, please see below the reports from previous funding recipients, together with links to various resources produced by them.

If you would like to discuss our support for outreach further, please contact our Outreach Officer on the dedicated outreach email address: asmcf-outreach@protonmail.com.

Funds from £5001500 are available for projects up to 36 months in duration. The fund aims to support projects that:

  • Support outreach events in schools or connecting schools with universities
  • Create learning resources that promote the learning of French and/or histories of the French-speaking world
  • Assist teachers in primary, post-primary and further education
  • Promote the learning of marginalised histories, cultures, and societies in the French-speaking world.

This fund operates on a rolling deadline and accepts submissions at any time. For more detailed information about the prize, please click on the Terms and Conditions link below.
